Visit Two Harbors, Catalina Island
Avalon, California
Description
Added by Katie Jo Myers
Two Harbors is an incredibly special place where you can enjoy outdoor adventures and coastal wildlife, just miles from Los Angeles.
Just 30 miles from the commotion and congestion of Los Angeles, is a small island village that time seems to have left behind. You won't find the usual traffic, development, and big crowds here. You won't find movie theaters, concert venues, hotels, nightclubs, or sporting events either. At Catalina Island's village of Two Harbors, nature provides the entertainment and accommodations. Whether you're camping on the beach, mooring your boat, exploring the crystal clear waters, or hiking into the hills, this little isthmus is the perfect place to slow down, unplug, and appreciate the world around you.
Though it's only half a mile wide, Two Harbors has plenty to offer in terms of outdoor adventures, with 700 boat moorings, four campgrounds, access to miles of hiking and biking trails, and beautifully clear water perfect for undersea viewing. For those who don't bring their own equipment, kayak, SUP, snorkel, and dive rentals are all available.
If you're more of the kick-back-and-relax type, Two Harbors is home to a bed and breakfast, rental cabins, a full service restaurant, and a general store. And for those on the opposite side of the spectrum, who really want to get away from it all, Two Harbors is a great jumping off point for thru hikers and backpackers. It also offers shuttles to the more remote camping locations on Catalina Island.
Though Two Harbors is a great destination, part of its appeal also exists in the journey to get there. For boat owners, It's a 6-10 hour sail from Marina Del Rey, or can be done in as short as 4 hours from San Pedro, depending on wind and swell conditions. For non-boat owners, it's a quick one hour ferry from San Pedro.
Whichever way you go, be on the lookout for dolphins! They can turn out in droves!
