The Skyline Trail to Aerial Tramway Top Station is a challenging hike near Palm Springs, known for its dramatic elevation gain and scenic transitions from desert to alpine terrain. Starting from the Palm Springs Art Museum, the trail ascends over 8,200 feet in elevation before reaching the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway’s Mountain Station

As you ascend, the trail takes you from the base of the San Jacinto Mountains into Mt. San Jacinto State Park, offering breathtaking views and a dramatic shift in climate and scenery. The trail’s difficulty increases after passing Rescue Box 2, with steeper inclines as you approach the tram station. Once you reach the tram station, you’ll be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the Palm Springs Valley, San Jacinto Peak, and beyond .

It’s important to plan ahead for the descent, as the hike is typically done one-way, with most hikers booking the tram for the return journey to avoid retracing their steps on this strenuous trail. There is a fee for the Aerial Tramway, which varies depending on the time of year but is generally around $30-$40 for adults. It is highly recommended to book tickets for the tram in advance, especially on weekends and holidays, to secure a spot for the ride down, as the tram can fill up quickly. You can book tickets online through the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway website. Additionally, there is a $10 parking fee at the tram station if you plan to leave a vehicle there.

Hiking this trail is best done during the cooler months of April or November to avoid extreme heat. After completing the hike, many enjoy a well-deserved rest and refreshment at the tram station before taking the tram back down to the valley. Be aware that although the trail is strenuous, the experience of transitioning from desert to forest, combined with the scenic beauty at higher elevations, makes it a must-do adventure for seasoned hikers

Hikers should note that while no permits are required to hike the Skyline Trail itself, careful preparation is key due to the trail’s steep and exposed nature. The cooler temperatures at higher elevations, combined with the availability of facilities like restrooms and food at the top station, make this a popular option for those seeking a challenging day hike with the convenience of the tram ride down.

Skyline Trail to Aerial Tramway Top Station Reviews

This trail is very difficult. You should read up on this and be well prepared. Over 8K feet of elevation gain in just over 9 miles. That means it's STEEP. That being said, it's an incredible hike. You start in the desert and end in beautiful alpine terrain. It's best to start this hike before dawn (with a headlight) so you beat the heat at the lower elevations. Optimal months to do this hike are April and November. Enjoy an ice-cold drink at the top of the tram restaurant. You deserve it after this hike. Then it's just a tram ride and Uber back to the trailhead.
