After previously being a private park only permitting Palo Alto residents, the Foothills Park opened to the public in 2021.
Situated in the hills above Palo Alto; Foothills Park is the perfect spot to spend the day outdoors. With hiking, fishing, picnic areas, wide open fields, and expansive views of the Bay Area, this hidden gem is a must visit.
Foothills Park is 2.7 miles west of 280 after exiting Page Mill. After exiting you take a short scenic drive up the hill and come to the park entrance on your right. Like any typical park it's open from sunset to sundown and you wont have to worry about parking or any fees. Once you drive in you'll first notice the beautiful little lake nestled down below the road on the left. You'll come to a fork in the road where you and either drop down to the lake or continue on where you'll be led to the top of the hill with unbelievable views of the entire Bay Area.
Down by the lake there are three little docks extending out into the water. From here you can drop a line or even rent a boat on the weekends from the gatehouse at the entrance to the park. There is also a path that wraps around the entire lake if you are more interested in taking a little stroll. Scattered along the lake are picnic tables and charcoal grills to set up a picnic for you and your crew. My personal favorite part of the lake is the small island on the far side with a beautiful arching bridge that guides you over the water.
Right on the waters edge is a massive green lawn which is perfect for any activity, be it frisbee, baseball, volleyball or anything else. If you continue down the hill you'll see more open fields and picnic areas. Foothills park has everything you could ask for, but my favorite part is that even in an overpopulated area of the peninsula, it is never crowded. You will always have ample room to yourself even on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.
