The trail to Magee Peak and Crater Peak makes for a fairly strenuous hike (mostly due to altitude). This USFS out-and-back trail has incredible views of the major peaks in the Northern California & Southern Oregon.
Take in a spectacular close-up of Lassen NP and great views of Shasta, Castle Craigs, the Trinity Alps, Yolla Ballys, and Mt. McLaughlin. The USFS hike is technically to Magee Peak, but then Crater Peak can be accessed with about 3/4 mi across the saddle later. There is a beautiful snow bowl that folks like to winter sport in.
The trail on the last 1 mile, or basically where you break above treeline, is illegible, and as of 06/01/21, still covered in intermittent patches of snow. Even without snow, the trail isn't too obvious, just keep hiking up. There is no water source on this trail. As it is still "early" in the season, there were roughly 15 downed trees to climb over, and the trail condition was on the messier side. In fact, we had to park about 1/3rd mile before the trailhead because of a downed tree. Still a great 10/10 hike, or snowshoe adventure (Nov-April).
P.S. Take the Forest Service Road from Highway 49-any other route is sketchy and confusing.
