Hike to Storseterfossen

Storseterfossen is a must do if you find yourself in Geirangerfjord, Norway. Geirangerfjord is known for it's massive fjord walls, breathtaking cruises, and grand vistas, but one of the best treasures lies just outside of town in the Vesterås valley. 

To get to the trail head drive west, away from the fjord, up route 63. After a few switchbacks there will be a sign for Storseterfossen and take a sharp left onto a single lane dirt road that leads towards the carpark at Vesterås Restaurant, a few feet from the trailhead. The road is narrow and sketchy if you have to pass another car, so drive with caution. We were accompanied by sheep on the road, which made it interesting and entertaining. Drive through the gate (and close it behind you) and keep going until you reach the end.  

There are a few different trails to take to the falls, and I opted for the easier green trail which is about 2km. It's a well marked trail so worry not about getting lost. Follow the trail through an open field, and watch your step for sheep poop. After a few minutes in the field you go through a fence where you reach rock steps, which were laid by sherpas in 2014, making the hike easier. Follow the steps uphill until you reach an open field with views of Vinsåshornet peak, and the cascading river below. There is also a rock feature protruding over the trail which makes for a cool photo op and stunning views. 

From that plateau, the waterfall is a few feet away. It's a short, rocky trail, with a chain fence. Be cautious because the waterfall makes the rocks wet and slippery so feel free to use the chains for support. Once you get behind the falls you will most likely get wet, so be prepared. Since it was summer, it was quite refreshing after the hike up. What makes this hike special is how intimate and secluded it is. 

I recommend three hours for this hike from start to finish. It should take around an hour up and 45 minutes down but depending on the conditions it could be trickier and take longer. Also you have to factor in time behind the waterfall and possibly having a snack at that grassy plateau by the falls.
