A hike to an amazingly secluded beach
Kalami beach is one of the most secluded beaches in the island of Kythera. The reason that this amazing beach remains secluded is because it takes considerable effort to get there - at least for people who are not into hiking.
From the village of Mylopotamos you take the small road towards the monastery of Panagia Orfani (approximately 10min - 4km). At the monastery there is a small parking area where you can park your car (a dirt road continues but you should only consider taking it if you have a highly capable 4x4 vehicle). From there starts a trail that takes you to Kalami beach.
The trail is rather short, approximately 1 - 1.5km however it does present some difficulties and it will take no less than 20min to reach the beach. What is important to remember though, is that this is a trail that will require your attention and in some parts your hands. Therefore prepare accordingly with some proper hiking shoes and a hiking backpack - the reason I insist on that is because I have met people on the trail that think because it ends on a beach they should wear flip flops and carry a million things and they have paid it dearly.
At the end of the trail just before you reach the beach the rocks are rather high and therefore you descent using two ropes that are already secured there. It is nothing too significant, however it takes some effort and you should be prepared for that (see photos).
Arriving at the beach, it is a simple joy. The beach is wonderful with pebble stones and the waters crystal clear. The best time to be there is in the afternoon as the beach is on the western side and therefore it is lit by the falling sun. In the beach there are absolutely no facilities, so be prepared and have adequate water with you and maybe a snack or two. A swimming suit is optional as you will encounter very few people.
