Hike the Sunset Trail

Cedar Breaks National Monument is a gorgeous multi-colored limestone amphitheater that many consider to be more beautiful than Bryce Canyon National Park given its greater depth over a shorter distance and higher elevation. It is far less traveled than its neighbors of Zion and Bryce.

The Sunset Trail is a recently-built, 1-mile (2-mile out-and-back) trail that runs along the eastern rim of the amphitheater from the campground near the visitor center. The views of the amphitheater are fantastic and the sunsets unparalleled given the western facing nature of the monument.

To get to the national monument you can take either Highway 14 east from I-15 in Cedar City, going north (left) on Highway 148, or you can take Highway 143 south from I-15 at Parowan. Alternately from the east, you can choose either Highway 143 from Panguitch at Highway 89 (typically coming from Bryce) or Highway 14 from Highway 89 near Duck Creek Village. 

The Sunset Trail itself begins either at the Sunset Overlook or the campground and proceeds a mile. 

In the winter, Highway 148 is frequently closed due to snow and even late into spring the trail can be muddy and/or covered in snow.

Pets are allowed but must be kept on a leash.
