Description
Added by Crystal Sibson
The Hoodoo Loop Trail is a quick hike just off the highway that offers unique rock formations in a forest setting.
Hoodoo's are unique rock formations formed over many years by erosion. In this region, the hoodoos are formed through a process called frost wedging. This is the process of repeated freeze thaw cycles. As snow melts the water seeps between the cracks in the rocks then freezes at night when the temperatures drop. The water expands as it freezes slowly widening the cracks. This region can have as many as 200 freeze thaw cycles per year.
The Hoodoo Loop Trail takes you through the pines and past some of the most prominent hoodoo's in this area. It's a short hike, perfect for a quick stop during a road trip to nearby Bryce Canyon. To access the trail, park at the Red Canyon Visitor center and proceed to the west side of the building. Be sure to stop inside the visitor center for maps and additional information about things to do in the surrounding area.
