Explore Giant Rock
Landers, California
Description
Added by Ryan Johnson
Giant Rock is a large freestanding boulder in the Mojave Desert near Landers, California, that covers 5,800 square feet of ground and is seven stories high. Giant Rock is purported to be the largest free standing boulder in the world.
This is an adventure that my wife and me have been wanting to do for a while now. We finally decided to make the 30 minute journey out to Landers from Yucca Valley. There are quite a few points of interest along the way, but that is a story for another adventure.
Giant Rock is 5.2 miles northwest of the Integratron (another desert wonder) on unmarked and unpaved roads. Along unmarked Giant Rock Road (the mountain will be on your left). The rock is right along the road on the left. It is going to feel like you are maybe lost, but just keep going. You will see this behemoth from quite a ways back.
Once you arrive, there are a lot of rocks to climb on and area to explore around. It is ideal for photography and bouldering.
