Fort Clinch is a beautiful and historic fort definitely worthy of a visit when near the southeast Florida and Georgia border.

This fort was one of the last large brick forts finished in the 1800s. The fort was first established in 1847 and was almost complete when the Confederate army took control of the fort in 1860 but by 1862 it was back under Union control. The fort was then finished but left mostly empty. It was not until the Spanish-American war in 1898 that the fort was used again.

In the 1930s the CCC rebuilt parts of the fort and they constructed the museum, campground, and park roads. Today you can check out the fort and see the massive cannons mounted as well as the officer quarters, blacksmith, kitchen, prison, and barracks. The state park also offers hiking, biking, fishing, shark tooth hunting and much more. This park is also home to a ton of wildlife including birds, turtles, snakes, and other species. The campground is open year round and is a great place to stay.

We visited Fort Clinch over a weekend and really enjoyed ourselves. There are two loops in the campground if you are looking to stay the night. If you going on a day trip, there is a wonderful day use area on the beach side with lots of parking, an amazing bike repair and bike wash area, a super cool covered birdwatching Area, and of course the boardwalk to the beach. Check the website as the beach access has been closed due to damage, but hopefully will open back up soon. If you head to the northern end of the park, you will discover Fort Clinch itself and it’s museum. There are also two access roads to get to the beach with the Fort as a backdrop. The park also has a wonderful mountain biking and hiking trail as well as paved roads for cruising around. There is an entrance fee per vehicle and visiting the museum and fort is $2.50 per person. Go check it out!
