Camp at Oh Be Joyful Campground
Crested Butte, Colorado
Description
Added by Kathleen Buenviaje
Fall asleep to the sounds of the river, for FREE. This BLM campground is located in Crested Butte, CO.
Oh Be Joyful Campground sits on the banks of the Slate River and consists of 15 camp sites dispersed over a decent amount of ground, split into two sides of the river. The river, when it's low is more of a stream and is only passable when it's low. It's a small thrill to drive through it to get to the other campsites and trailhead. One thing to note is that there is only one bathroom at this campground, so if you decide to camp on the other side of the river, you'll need to cross it every time you need to do the deed. There are no bridges and where your vehicle crosses the river the water level can get above your wheel well.
Each site comes with a fire pit and table and despite this being a free campground, it is incredibly clean. Across the river the sites are greeted with tons of cow pies/dung. Choose your site wisely.
If you can overcome that, there are some hidden gems and great campsites to set up at. Several if not all sites have direct access to the river making it easy to filter water when needed.
Activities are plentiful at this campground, ranging from mountain bike riding, fishing, photography and hiking, or if you prefer, plenty of trees to lounge in your hammock and enjoy the scenery.
If you plan it correctly, spending some time here during the fall will leave you mesmerized as you are surrounded by 360º of Aspens and gorgeous mountain views.
The town is just a short 15-20 minute drive away in the event you want to escape nature and live the mountain town life. The road to get to the campground is bumpy and unpaved, so prepare yourself for that.

Camp at Oh Be Joyful Campground Reviews
Oh Be Joyful campsite could have been pulled straight out of a painting, the fishing is good, and there are great views in all directions. When I stayed there the camp was crowded, but with a great atmosphere between the off-roaders, mountain bikers, and RVers (although there is a steep muddy incline down off the main road so it seemed unlikely an RV could get out in wet conditions). Also, stop by gas cafe at the shell station on the outskirt of CB for an amazing breakfast and great atmosphere.
